The Nagoya HeForShe Club started as a discussion circle from late 2017 based on the solidarity campaign for gender equality of the U.N, which our university was given the honor to be the champion of. Held together by students from the international and exchange program, we enjoy the presence of members from all around the globe, from Germany to America, from South Korea to India and more. It is because of this group of diverse background that we are able to exchange information and clarify issues of gender discrimination globally.
Our mission is simple: a grassroots awareness campaign for gender equality in Japan. Despite our “club” nametag, we see ourselves more of a part of a movement. Students from any corner of our university are welcomed to join us in our meeting and events at any time, as like the help and collaboration with various professors, speakers, and clubs from other universities.
Our club activities involve weekly discussions Monday nights on gender equality issues in and outside of Japan, these discussions get really interesting as we have opinions from a range of countries and we learn something new every week. Along with this, the HeforShe student club conducts special events like movie and documentary screenings on feminist issues as well as seminars by NGOs and professors who work for gender equality, thus, broadening our circle of awareness beyond Nagoya university. We also volunteer with the HeforShe office at Nagoya University and organize our own booth at the university festival “Meidaisai”. Moreover, our club also conducts mind relaxing exercises like forest work therapies and end-of-session self-care meetings to relax back and reflect on what we discussed throughout the semester.
Through our club activities, we aim to better understand gender equality issues and to make it an important discussion point in Japan. Our international club fosters understanding and allows new perspectives on issues we haven’t considered in that way. We do not discriminate against people and their opinions, but offer an open and honest dialogue regarding gender problems. Our club aims to make it clear that gender equality is the mere act of, regardless of your identity, treating people of other genders with dignity, with respect, through understanding, knowledge, and skills.
